The Project
Egnyte’s current training portal was not easy for users to find, and even more difficult when they would try to take a course. The training team also struggled to maintain current courses and make new courses available because of the limited functionality. With the redesign, we used a new service that allowed full customization and flexibility to create the ideal training portal for our users.

My Role
I worked as the sole designer of this project, managing the user research, user experience, and UI. I also took on the customization role and implemented the design with HTML, CSS, and JS with Skilljar's custom theming feature.

Egnyte University's final and current design
Lots of friction for both sides
The Training team was looking into a new educational service to easily allow our customers to take interactive training courses they create, as well as making it easier for themselves (our training team) to add and maintain training content. Another problem with the tool was the flow for taking a course required a user to first register, then start the course - which was two clicks to get to the content

Egnyte's previous training site
Skilljar - the ideal training service
Skilljar provided a lot of customization, which allows us to design the learning portal to fit our needs. With this new tool, we were allowed to host any type of content on this site - bringing all of the training content to one place.
Content public or private?
With Skilljar’s capability of allowing visitors to browse the catalog page without signing in, we considered changing the learning portal, which was previously only viewable to Egnyte users.
Keeping it public would have shown prospective customers that we provide our users with valuable training to get the most out of the product. On the downside, we would be exposing some of the details of our product that we would want to protect from competitors.

Comparison of keeping Egnyte University private to Egnyte users only, or open to the public
In the end, we compromised and created a training landing page that described the type of training that we offered so prospects would understand that we offered training, while still protecting our content.
All training in one place
Even though Egnyte offered multiple ways to get training like short tutorial videos and live webinars, the training portal only hosted the interactive courses. Since we wanted to move all 3 of these resources into Skilljar, we had to consider how users got to these resources today and how they would change if they used them in Skilljar.

Interactive Training vs. Egnyte University
One change that happened to Egnyte University a year before the redesign was changing the name to Interactive Training to try to improve usage. The Training manager felt strongly about changing it back to Egnyte University for branding purposes, so we analyzed the data of when we changed the name to Interactive Training.

The number of clicks into training from the Egnyte Web UI. The name was Egnyte University initially in January 2015, and changed to Interactive Training in December 2015
Overall, it seemed like usage kept declining regardless of the name change - which is most likely in part to the user experience rather than the label of the link. in this case, we changed in back to Egnyte University.
Less customization, the better
After launch, eventually we realized the amount of customization we had initially included was troublesome when Skilljar would release any changes. The reason why we included customization was for multi-level filters. Eventually, Skilljar released this as their own feature so we were able to transfer to use their feature instead of our own customization.

Post Launch
After launching, we had seen an increase in unique logins, but not course registrations or course completions. The unique login was credited to being able to access Egnyte University from more ways than just Egnyte's Web UI. The reason for course registrations and completions were low may have been to being unsure about how long the course was, or what a course "entailed". From this, we also included estimated times to each courses in the catalog.
